“Yuletide at Winterthur,” Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, Delaware

Visitors on this year’s Yuletide tour will be treated to an array of sparkling trees and American Christmas vignettes, from scenes inspired by the work of Currier & Ives to a Mississippi family’s holiday decorations on the eve of the Civil War to the White House in the early 1900s.

winterthur-dollhouseOf particular note this year, displayed in The Galleries’ stair hall, is the new doll “mansion.” The 6-foot by 3-foot slate-roofed and fully-electrified dollhouse, inspired by Queen Mary’s dollhouse, was assembled by creator Nancy McDaniel over a period of 30 years and donated to Winterthur. The 18-room house contains nearly 1,000 intricate miniature objects and is fully decorated with wreaths, candles, and trees.

“Yuletide at Winterthur” will be on view until January 8, 2017.

Following the Yuletide tour, be sure to visit LASTING IMPRESSIONS: The Artists of Currier and Ives. The exhibition investigates the role of Frances Bond Palmer and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, two of the most prolific artists of Currier & Ives, in the New York art world of the Victorian era. In association with Currier and Ives, Palmer and Tait produced some of today’s most sought-after prints. On view in Winterthur’s East Gallery will be more than 40 works of art selected from the museum collection, as well as those from private collections. As part of the exhibition, there will also be several multimedia installations, including a video documenting the history of Currier & Ives and interactive touch-screens. LASTING IMPRESSIONS will also be on view through January 8, 2017.

Happy Holidays!
