On October 4, Harold Imperatore, proprietor of the Bernards Inn in Bernardsville, New Jersey, announced that Elizabeth Katz has been named Executive Pastry Chef at the award-winning restaurant. In this capacity, Ms. Katz will be responsible for overseeing the pastry department, as well as developing dessert menus for the restaurant, catering, and banquets.
“We’re delighted to welcome Elizabeth Katz to our culinary team at the Bernards Inn,” Mr. Imperatore noted. “She brings a vast amount of experience, energy and creativity to our kitchen.”
Ms. Katz is already redefining the dessert experience at the Bernards Inn with her seasonal creations. Her approach to combining the freshest ingredients with “something unexpected” results in pure flavors with delicious elements that delight and surprise the palate. She unveiled her new fall dessert menu this week, with a variety of sweet selections, including: Pumpkin Brioche Pudding, Autumn Fruits, Milk Chocolate Malted Torte, and Classic Crème Brûlée.
A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Ms. Katz has been named one of the nation’s Top Ten Pastry Chefs in 2006 and 2007 by Pastry Arts & Design and Chocolatier. At just 24, Mr. Katz’s culinary talent and strong work ethic helped her secure a position as sous pastry chef at Daniel in New York, a restaurant the New York Times granted a coveted four stars. From there, she moved on to become executive pastry chef at Fiamma Restaurant in SoHo before taking responsibility for 14 pastry departments as Corporate Executive Pastry Chef for the BR Guest Restaurant group in 2003. Prior to taking the position at the Bernards Inn, Ms. Katz was executive pastry chef at Maritime Parc in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Ms. Katz loves the art of the plated dessert but is equally motivated by creating specialty cakes, petits fours, mignardise, and other dessert items for special occasions and weddings. “I love the creativity of being a pastry chef and the challenge of balancing flavors and textures that complement one another,” Ms. Katz explains. “I strive to create desserts that don’t weigh you down but always give you the perfect sweet finish to your meal.”
