Each year, the wild fiddlehead ferns come in season in the late spring, and are exported from the cool, damp woods of northern New England and eastern Canada to gourmet restaurants and greenmarkets around the country. To commemorate their arrival each year, Fiddleheads Restaurant in Jamesburg, New Jersey, which is named after the edible baby ostrich fern, creates a special menu featuring fiddleheads.

This culinary event draws crowds of diners from all over central New Jersey. Foodies everywhere are enchanted with the crunchy green delicacy, whose flavor is reminiscent of earthy asparagus or broccoli rabe, and flock to Fiddleheads to taste a variety of specials in which they are featured. Since they are a “wild” food, Fiddleheads’ executive chef, New Brunswick resident Dan Davis, pairs them with wild-game dinner specials.

This year, Fiddleheads’ “wild” menu launches tomorrow, Thursday, May 23rd, and will last as long as the ferns are available. The following specials will be available during dinner hours…

Elk Osso Buco with Fiddleheads… White-Tail Venison Medallions with Fiddleheads & Fried Potatoes… Stuffed Rainbow Trout with Fiddleheads… Buffalo Medallions with Risotto & Fiddlehead Ratatouille… Roast Pheasant with Fiddleheads… “Northern Exposure” Pasta with Fiddleheads

Fiddlheads is also returning the exceptionally popular annual appetizer special, Wild Fiddleheads “Calamari-Style”: wild Canadian fiddleheads coated with buttermilk, flour, and bread crumbs then flash-fried crispy brown, and served with dual sauces – tangy lemon aioli and traditional spicy tomato sauce. Other appetizer specials include Fiddlehead Goat Cheese Tart and Kiwi Mussels with Fiddleheads.

Diners who wish to try just the fiddleheads may substitute the ferns for the vegetable on Fiddleheads’ regular dinner entrées for an upcharge, or order a separate side of sautéed fiddleheads. All menu items featuring fiddleheads are available during dinner hours only.

Fiddleheads, a full-service, New American gourmet restaurant since 1992, and under new ownership since 2004, is located in downtown Jamesburg, NJ, at 27 East Railroad Avenue. The restaurant is open for lunch Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. An à la carte Sunday brunch is also featured. The restaurant is closed Mondays & Tuesdays. Fiddleheads welcomes diners to bring their own wine or beer.
