On Saturday evening, December 29th, Stage Left in New Brunswick, New Jersey, will host a special Dickensian dinner, featuring cuisine that was enjoyed by Charles Dickens, his wife, Catherine, and their ten children.
Charles Dickens didn’t invent Christmas; but, until his wonderful stories, its celebration was on the wane. It was the magic of his pen – along with Queen Victoria’s championing of the holiday – that revived its prominence. By all accounts, he and his family kept Christmas well in their home.
In fact, Dickens’ wife, Catherine Thompson Dickens, was also an excellent cook; she also published a cookbook, What Shall We Have For Dinner, circa 1851.
The Dickensian dinner will begin with a winter wassail and passed hors d’oeuvres at 7:00 p.m. Following this libation will be chestnut soup, roasted goose, turkey, duchess potatoes, baked apples stuffed with dried fruits & pecans, glazed carrots with walnuts, plum pudding with hard sauce, and mincemeat pie.
The cost of the dinner is $89.00 per person. The wassail is included and other period beverages (sherry, Madera, punch, red & white wine) will be offered for sale.
