On Saturday, November 10th, the wine group in our community met to play “Name That Grape,” a blind tasting of four white wines and three reds. Of the seven, two proved palpable hits with a majority of the participants. The white was the 2010 La Posta Cocina Blanco noted in yesterday’s blog. The second was the 2009 Project Paso, Paso Robles Old Vine Zinfandel.
This California Zinfandel was produced from grapes harvested from three different vineyards in Paso Robles. A single-vineyard Petite Sirah was also blended in for additional color and texture. As such, the wine exhibits an interesting complexity of flavors and aromas, all kept in harmonious balance by a rather hefty but subtle infusion of 14.4% alcohol.
In the glass, this wine opens up with a nose redolent of dried fruit pepper, touch of Indian spices, and just the slightest pleasant hint of gaminess. The old vine spicy notes linger on the palate, offering up a medium-bodied vintage with light tannins and hints of espresso on the finish.
This is a very nice Zinfandel that maintains a balanced elegance throughout. A definite winner priced at approximately $12.00 per bottle.
Cheers!
