On Wednesday, June 20th, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Restaurant Nicholas in Middletown, New Jersey, will kick off the first official day of summer with a walk-around tasting that showcases 12 “must have” wines for the 2012 summer season.

Nicholas has personally selected these wines with your backyard BBQ in mind, picking varietals that pair perfectly with grilled meats, fish, and seasonal vegetables.

Passed hors d’oeuvres and artisanal cheeses will be served during the tasting. The cost is $75.00 per person. If participants choose to order wine, the restaurant will use $50.00 of the entry fee toward the purchase. Attendees will also receive a 15% discount with any mixed case purchase.

Listed below are the wines available for tasting and for sale…

Domaine Saint Amant Côtes du Rhône, La Borry, 2011: This white wine, a brilliantly fresh Viognier, exhibits white peach & tangerine fruit and a perfectly balanced crisp finish. Pairs well with lobster & crab. Price: $18.00 per bottle.

Chateau Turcaurd Entre-Deux-Mers Blanc, 2011: The Entre-Deux-Mers 2011 is a tank-fermented, clean & crisp blend of Sauvignon Blanc (60%) and Semillion (40%). Price: $13.00 per bottle.

Giovanni Almondo Arneis Bricco delle Ciligie, 2011: Arneis is the noble white varietal of Piedmont. This wine dazzles with aromas of white flowers, almonds, and a touch of sage. The production is quite small, 300 cases or so; truly one of Italy’s great wines. Price: $22.00 per bottle.

Clos Julien Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, 2010: Rich & ripe, yet still infused with Clos Julien’s benchmark acid balance, the 2010 Chardonnay is delicious now but will continue to age gracefully for 3-4 years. Price: $15.00 per bottle.

Sperino Coste della Sesia Rosa del Rosa, 2011: Rosa de Rosa is a tank fermented rosé made from 70%Nebbiolo and 30% Vespolina. It is a bright, violet-scented rosé with exquisite red berry fruit on the palate. Price: $21.00 per bottle.

Domaine Jean-Charles Rion Savigny-les-Beaune, Vieilles Vignes, 2010: Produced from 50-year-old vines, this wine exhibits aromas of high-toned berry fruit and a touch of spice. On the palate, the mineral-tinged, pure Pinot fruit is absolutely delicious and the perfect match for roasted poultry, grilled salmon, and grilled meats. Price: $32.00 per bottle.

Elio Grasso Dolcetto d’Alba, 2011: Elio Grasso’s Dolcetto is a deeply colored and intensely scented wine with ripe flavors of spicy red fruits. Pairs well with grilled meat, pasta, mushroom dishes, and sheep cheeses. Price: $21.00 per bottle.

Farella-Park Merlot, Napa Valley, 2007: This Merlot is stylistically like a Right Bank Bordeaux. It is aromatically complex, exhibiting that classic claret cigar box spice that is so rare in American wine. The fruit is round and plush tinged with cedar and savory spices. This medium-bodied wine is perfect for refined cuisine or aging. Pair with grilled beef. Price: $29.00 per bottle.

Beckmen Vineyards Syrah, 2010: This Syrah from California’s Santa Ynez Valley is full bodied with excellent depth, richness and length. Drink now – 2018. Price: $27.00 per bottle.

Fabre Montmayou Malbec Patagonia Barrel Selection, 2010: Big, bold, complex, and opulent, this wine goes well with any variation of comfort food. Price: $13.50 per bottle.

Rockledge Cabernet Sauvignon, The Rocks, 2009: Exhibiting incredible color and aromatic complexity; this wine also demonstrates an incredible finesse that is rarely found in Napa Valley Cabernets, except for some of those 100-pointers. Price: $40.00 per bottle.

Weingut Freiherren Von Heddesdorff Feinherb, 2010: Produced from old vines rooted in the rocky soil of Germany’s Mosel district, the 2010 Riesling Feinherbhas exhibits an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone, and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by a marvelously steely acidity. Price: $18.00 per bottle.
