If you’re looking for the perfect wine to share with your spouse/significant other on Valentine’s Day, trust me, the 2005 Penfolds “St. Henri” Shiraz is guaranteed to warm your heart – as well as other parts of your anatomy.
Penfolds is a South Australian winery that was founded in 1844 by Christopher & Mary Penfold, a physician and his wife who emigrated from England to Australia. It is one of Australia’s oldest and highly regarded wineries with an extensive range of selections. Including, I might add, the world famous “Grange,” a Shiraz that retails, depending upon the vintage, for between $200.00 and $500.00 per bottle.
The 2005 “St. Henri,” is no slouch either. This critically acclaimed vintage – 95 points from the Wine Spectator, 94 points from the Australian Wine Companion, and 92 points from the International Wine Cellar – is a silky and downright sexy wine. The color is an eye-appealingly deep garnet; aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and vanilla waft from the glass; and the palate is completely beguiled by a lush, velvety texture rife with dark berry and toasty spice.
The price for a full bottle (750ml) of this exhilarating elixir ranges between $50.00 and $70.00. However, recently I have seen half bottles (375ml) on sale for as low as $14.99 – an absolute steal. And quality half bottles, which are generally notoriously difficult to obtain at various retailers, are always handy to have around.
This is a truly fabulous wine that has miles to go before it sleeps and will undoubtedly age gracefully over the next ten years. But bargains like this tend to fly off the shelves. If I were you, I’d get a move on…
Cheers!
