Located in the Piedmont region in the extreme northwest corner of Italy, just below France & Switzerland, the Beni di Batasiolo Winery is better known for its sumptuous red wines rather than its whites… But their 2009 Gavi Granée is a winner in every respect.
Produced from the Cortese grape, Gavi is known for its clean refreshing wines that are, thankfully, seldom oaked. And the 2009 Gavi Granée is a stunning example of this often overworked, overproduced varietal at its very best.
On the nose there is a touch of pear and green apple, which then follow through to the palate, combined with just a hint of spice. The wine exhibits a crisp acidity, which makes it perfect for summertime quaffing; it also marries exceedingly well with a variety of foods… But there is also a marvelously balanced complexity of fresh fruit, aromatics, and 12.5% alcohol. The finish is sensuously long and lingering.
Going for $15.00 and $19.00 per bottle (depending upon your location and retailer), this wine is a comparative bargain, as it outshines a slew of ponderously over-oaked California chardonnays that will set you back twice the price… Stock up while you can.
Bon Appétit!
