This past weekend, my wife and I spent a relaxing time at our favorite New Jersey Bed & Breakfast, the Wooden Duck in Newton.
Tucked away in the woods about two miles off Route 206, adjacent to Kittatinny Valley State Park, away from the hustle and bustle, this is the perfect spot to unwind and chill out.
The Wooden Duck has always been an incomparably comfortable place to settle in; but since Beth & Karl Krummel took over the proprietorship about five years ago, it is infinitely more inviting. The rooms and suites are cozy and well-appointed but without the ambient frou-frou so characteristic of many B & Bs. Beth & Karl are the perfect hosts, always willing to engage in spirited conversation or to recommend restaurants or sight-seeing opportunities in the area. And, speaking of food, Beth’s incredibly delicious and generous country breakfasts will surely be the highlight of your stay.
My wife and I were in the area to visit friends & relatives and also to check out a number of dining spots. I’ll be posting complete reviews in the very near future; but, for now, here’s a brief rundown…
The Inn at Millrace Pond, Hope: Changed ownership and chefs a few years ago… The food was very nearly beneath contempt.
Riviera Maya, Branchville: A casual, festive Mexican eatery with very good food and first-rate frozen margaritas. A real find.
Andre’s Restaurant and Wine Boutique, Newton: A return visit after five years. Still a marvelous dining experience.
Bon Appétit!
