Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30th, from 6:00 p.m. ‘til 8:00 p.m., winemaker Eric Miller of Pennsylvania’s acclaimed Chaddsford Winery will introduce his new 2007 Essence, his first ever “Terroir” blend crafted from seven red varieties he hand grows on his Miller Estate Vineyard in northern Chester County.
In a gala unveiling at Old City’s Pinot Boutique, 227 Market Street, Philadelphia, Mr. Miller will discuss his devotion to the idea of terroir and how it contributed to the creation of this exceptional wine. The event is free and open to the public.
“Wine is an expression of place, reflective of the weather, climate, soil, and people that come into contact with it from its start on the vine to the way it is aged and bottled in a cellar,” notes Mr. Miller. “Just as a red wine blend from Bordeaux is reflective of the place that created it, our Essence is, quite literally, the essence of our grapes and our viticultural region.”
Boasting a seven varietal blend that includes 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Pinot Noir, 14% Barbera, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Syrah, 9% Merlot, and 4% Sangiovese, all grown on Chaddsford Winery’s proprietary Miller Estate Vineyard, the wine has a bright, dark plum smell with hints of smoke and vanilla; an elegant, medium body with fine, grainy tannins and clean acidity; and flavors of plum, coffee, toffee, chocolate, and red fruit.
At $75.00 per bottle, it is Chaddsford’s most expensive and most significant wine to date, and was produced in extremely limited quantities, only 61 cases total. Mr. Miller maintains that it does not reflect any “typical” traditional models that usually emphasize “like” grape varieties.
In addition to the first public tasting on September 30th, discerning oenophiles will have a number of other opportunities to sample the new Essence…
