Evidently someone has been spreading a vicious rumor to the effect that the Mahogany Grille in Manasquan, NJ, has closed its doors and is no longer in business. Well, let me state without fear of contradiction that this rumor is COMPLETELY UNTRUE. In point of fact, I just received a communication from co-proprietor Frank Kropf personally assuring me that the Mahogany Grille is alive and well and still serving up extraordinary cuisine.
The restaurant’s wine list once again received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and the Wine Enthusiast Award of Distinction, and Executive Chef Ian Cooper is still the power behind the stove.
Delectable starters include lettuce wraps with crispy Asian beef, sticky rice, and julienne vegetables; colossal shrimp with cucumber-lime granita and classic cocktail sauce; and crackling fired calamari tossed with sweet Thai sauce.
Main courses beguile the palate with grilled salmon caressed by Pommery Mustard cream, Barnegat Light dayboat scallops house-made ravioli, and “Butcher’s Filet” with port wine demi-glace.
And be sure to try the chef’s tasting menu, which is available all evening Tuesday – Thursday, priced at just $25.00 per person.
The restaurant is currently observing winter hours: Tues – Thurs, 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.; Fri & Sat, 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.; closed Sunday & Monday.
I freely confess that this is one of my favorite NJ dining spots. Even when I may be reviewing another restaurant, if I’m anywhere in the area, I always make it a point to stop by the convivial bar for a preprandial libation.
