2007 Kris Pinot Gris, Venezia, Italy
Italian white wines – particularly Pinot Grigio (or Pinot Gris as it is known in France and the United States) – has always enjoyed a rather dubious reputation. Not that Pinot Grigio is a “bad” wine (depending upon the individual producer); it’s just that it has usually been considered rather bland of countenance – especially in comparison to some of the earth-shatteringly bold and buttery chardonnays.
But a funny thing happened on the way to your local wine merchant… people grew tired of those monstrously overoaked (and usually overpriced), lethally alcoholic California behemoths – especially during the warm days of summer. They wanted wines that were crisp and refreshing, wines that complemented their lighter cuisine rather than overwhelming it… And Pinot Grigio, along with a number of other varietals, filled the bill nicely.
The 2007 Kris Pinot Grigio is typical of those produced in northern Italy: It manifests a slew of bright citrus flavors and sports a definitive acidity perfectly balanced by 12.5% alcohol. With a bit of summer still ahead, this is the perfect warm weather libation.
And at $12.99 per bottle, it is a bargain as well.
Cheers!
