wine-of-the-month-august-20092008 Ken Forrester “Petit” Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, South Africa

Chenin Blanc undoubtedly originated in the Anjou region of France before migrating to its better known Loire and Rhone Valley locations. As of this writing, it is still the most widely planted varietal in South Africa, where it is also called “Steen.”

And there is absolutely no question that Chenin Blanc is certainly one of the most versatile of all wine grape varieties. It is used to produce everything from crisp white table wines to light, sparkling wines to nectarous dessert wines to brandies… But despite this marvelous versatility, the grape is generally better known for its blatant overproduction and bland, uninteresting vintages.

The notable exception to this general rule, however, is Ken Forrester’s 2008 “Petit.” Exhibiting exhilarating hints of melon, grapefruit, and apple, this is an attractive, eminently quaffable wine – especially during the laidback, lazy days of summer – that continues to tantalize right through its long, lingering finish.

And the price…? Ah, yes, the price… It goes for an incredible $9.00 per bottle. Trust me, bargains like this do not come along every day.

My advice… snatch up a case before someone else beats you to it.

Cheers!
