Frank Bruni is leaving his job at the “Dining Section” at the end of August to write for the New York Times Magazine and promote his new memoir, Born Round: the Secret History of a Full-Time Eater. He will be sorely missed.
When Mr. Bruni began his tenure, the “Bruni Bashers,” or so it seemed, were everywhere. Especially the boys (and girls) over at eGullet, who were unmerciful and, in my opinion, unjustified in their scathing and, at times, downright below-the-belt Bronx cheers.
Throughout his reign, however, Mr. Bruni clearly demonstrated that he possessed certain qualities that his critics obviously did not: namely, a decided touch of class, an engaging writing style, and a knowledge of food and restaurants that took readers beyond the usual recitation of menu taxonomies.
With the announcement of Mr. Bruni’s departure, of course, speculation is rife concerning his replacement. If you’re interested, you might want to check out the odds and possibilities here.
