Easter Culinary Happenings: Greek Taverna and Nisi Estiatorio

greektaverna1Both the Greek Taverna, 292 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, and Nisi Estiatorio, 90 Grand Avenue in Englewood, will celebrate two Easters: the American Easter on April 12th and the Orthodox Easter on April 19th.

 

Owner Peter Hajiyerou of the Greek Taverna wishes “Happy Easter” to lovers of authentic Greek cuisine by observing the holiday on both American and Greek Easter with a traditional 3-course menu in addition to the restaurant’s regular à la carte menu.

 

To begin, diners may choose traditional Easter lamb soup with egg and lemon or roasted beets and baby arugula with a yogurt-garlic sauce. The main course is slow-roasted Vermont baby lamb, artichokes, green olives, and orzo. Dessert will be the Taverna’s famous semolina custard wrapped in phyllo with citrus syrup. Greek Easter eggs and sweet Easter bread will also be available to make the celebration complete.

 

On both April 12th and April 19th, the Greek Taverna will be serving from 12:00 noon10:00 p.m. The cost of the special 3-course menu is $25.00 per person (plus tax & gratuity). To make reservations, please call (973) 746-2280.

 

In honor the Western Church and its celebration of Easter Sunday, Nisi Estiatorio will offer a celebration feast on Sunday April 12th of leg nisi1of lamb served with lemon, garlic roasted potatoes, and artichokes for $28.00 per person. On Sunday, April 19th, Orthodox Easter will be celebrated with traditional foods like magiritsa, a soup made of lamb offal, eggs, and lemon, and activities like the breaking of the eggs, all of which symbolize faith and good luck in the year to come.

 

The owners of Nisi, the Mourkakos family, and their partners, Chef John Piliouras and General manager Michael Liristis, are pleased to celebrate this important holiday to include both the Eastern Orthodox and Western philosophies of Christianity.
