As you enter, you discover a lovely, diminutive copper-top bar and wine boutique where you may enjoy a special preprandial libation or sample one of the select wines available by the glass. In the cozy main dining area, simple lace curtains adorn the front window while white Casablanca fans suspended from the black pressed-tin ceiling whirl silently overhead. Chef André deWaal’s innovative American menu with eclectic subtitles changes fortnightly; but whatever comestibles he may decide to present on a given evening, you may rest assured that your discriminating palate will not be disappointed. His most recent menu, for example, headlines starters such as house-cured salmon with cucumber, ginger, and mint, beef sirloin roasted beets served cool with Upland Cress & smoked shallots, and penne pasta with duck confit, and sage brown butter. Main courses feature the fish of the day kissed by an orange saffron vinaigrette, pan roasted duck breast with red wine and wild mushrooms, and boneless pork loin buttressed by a corn flake crust and paprika butter. Desserts are equally stylish, as is the first-rate wine list.
